Open source, open data
What do open data and open source software have in common? Licensing and user rights are at the core of both movements, both empower us to build applications in "bazaar" ways, and both can change the world.
Open data is a huge topic this year. President Obama's administration has committed to governmental transparency, and other countries are following his lead. More and more providers are opening up data APIs and encouraging data analysis and mashups. And at the same time, the Semantic Web -- for many years no more than a bunch of little-used specs -- is starting to become a reality.
This talk will give an overview of the open data world, and how open source developers can be part of it. We'll take a tour of some of the major open data projects, learn about open source tools to access and manipulate open data, and check out some of the best applications to come out of the intersection between the two communities.
